Week 30: Helsinki
We are still in Helsinki, but it feels like the tropics. The hot weather just continues, it's unbelievable for our dear northern home country. And talking about weird weather, this summer has been both the coldest and the hottest for decades.
Welcome to our weekly recap! This one's for July 24th - 30th, which is week 30, 2014.
Memorable moment: This Saturday was a perfect summer day. It was hot and sunny, and we spent almost the whole day in a park. Good time with friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for a long time. Cheeses, salads, plenty of (almost) cold wine and beer. And no hurry to go anywhere, just sit, talk and laugh until sunset.
Food love: Our friend brought a potato-avocado salad to one of our picnics. It was so good, I had to try it at home just a few days later. Here's how you do it: boil potatoes and leave them to cool, cube avocado + add some lime juice, cut the potatoes and onion, mix lime juice with olive oil, salt and pepper, throw everything together. Easy and delicious! And it all disappeared before I managed to get a photo. So here's a pic of a food truck. Good also.
Surprise of the week: There's so much good street food available nowadays in Helsinki. Few years back there were only the old grills selling greasy microwave burgers, but it all has changed. I love it! And a tip for you: every Wednesday (at least during summer) there's a Street Food Carnival at Kasarmitori, where food trucks gather for the evening. I went there this week and tried the Korean BBQ Pork Burrito. Amazing.
Tip of the week: If it is summer and it is a sunny day, the numerous parks of Helsinki are the place to be. Just grap a blanket and some company (or a good book, works as well), buy some cold sparkling from Alko (the only store selling wine in Finland) and head to a park. Some of my favorites are Tokoinranta (Hakaniemi), Tähtitorninvuori (Ullanlinna) and Koff park (Punavuori).
Workwise: Antti is swamped with work at the moment, that's why I'm doing the weekly recap for a change.
What I've learned: Editing photos takes so much time! I've been trying to catch up editing the photos we taken since we got a new camera in June, but I still have many evenings to go. I've leant to be more comfortable with the delete button. We do not need 10 photos of the exact same view, even if they are all a tiny bit different.
Random thought: We've been at one place for almost three weeks now. I have really enjoyed my time, seen friends, visited places and events. But my feet are getting itchy. Luckily on Sunday we'll hit the road again. One more week in Finland, then Germany (Bremen and Munich), followed by Slovenia. Yey!
And that's it for our week. How was yours?
